Greece · What it is

The Greek Long Stay D Visamedical certificate

Greece requires a broader assessment than Spain. The certificate must confirm freedom from diseases posing a public health risk under WHO standards and the EU acquis, supported by evidence relating to tuberculosis and syphilis.

The requirement derives from Greek immigration law (Law 4251/2014) and is set out by the Consular Office of the Embassy of Greece in London: a medical certificate issued by a recognised state or private institution, confirming that the applicant does not suffer from a disease that may constitute a risk to public health according to World Health Organization standards and the European Union acquis, as well as other infectious, contagious or parasitic diseases requiring measures to protect public health.

That final clause is what distinguishes Greece. Where Spain accepts a declaration drawn from medical history, Greece expects supporting evidence — specifically regarding active pulmonary tuberculosis and syphilis. Greek consulates also use their own certificate form, which must be completed, signed and stamped rather than replaced with a general letter.

Applicants for a Greek national visa are additionally required to attend the Consulate in person for an interview regarding the purpose of their stay, and UK applications are submitted through Global Visa Center World rather than at the Embassy directly.

Greece · Requirements

What Greece requires, and what we ask of you

Greece requires the most supporting evidence of the destinations we cover. Please read this section before ordering, as two test results are needed before your certificate can be issued.

What the consulate requires

  • Issue by a recognised state or private medical institution
  • Confirmation of freedom from diseases posing a public health risk under WHO standards and the EU acquis, including quarantinable diseases
  • Confirmation of freedom from active pulmonary tuberculosis
  • Confirmation of freedom from other infectious, contagious or parasitic diseases requiring public health measures
  • Completion of the Greek consular certificate form, signed and stamped
  • Confirmation of fitness to work, where the application is for a work visa
  • Recent issue — the Consulate generally expects documents dated within one month of submission

What we ask you to provide

  • Photo identification

Passport or UK driving licence, matching your visa application exactly.

  • Your completed health questionnaire

Medical history, conditions, medications and any history of infectious disease.

  • Your NHS Summary Care Record

Available from the NHS App or your GP's online portal. It provides our doctor with a verified view of your record.

  • Evidence of your TB status

Either proof of BCG vaccination — a record in your notes or a clear photograph of the scar on your upper arm — or, if you have not been vaccinated, a recent chest X-ray report confirming you are clear of tuberculosis.

  • A recent negative syphilis blood test

Available through your GP, a sexual health clinic, or a private laboratory. We are glad to advise on arranging this.

Allow time for the evidence. Arranging the TB evidence and syphilis result is the step that most affects your timeline. We recommend organising both before you order, or ordering early and sending them through as they arrive — four to six weeks before your consulate appointment is comfortable.
Greece · The exact form

We complete the exact formthe Embassy specifies

This is the question we are asked most often, so here is the direct answer. The Consular Office of the Embassy of Greece in London specifies a standard medical certificate form, completed in accordance with Article 5, paragraph 3 and Article 6 of Law 4251/2014. We complete that form in full. We do not substitute a general letter of good health.

The form requires the examining doctor to certify, on the basis of examination and laboratory results, that the applicant is free of each of the conditions set out below.

Standard Medical Certificate — Greek National (Type D) Visa

Specimen

The undersigned doctor of medicine certifies that, based on examination and the results of laboratory tests, the applicant has been found — in accordance with the provisions of Article 5, paragraph 3 and Article 6 of Law 4251/2014 — free of the following conditions:

A · Conditions which might endanger public health

  • Diseases subject to quarantine, as listed in the International Health Regulations of the World Health Organization
  • Tuberculosis of the respiratory system, in an active state or showing a tendency to develop
  • Syphilis
  • Other infectious or contagious parasitic diseases subject to provisions for the protection of nationals of the host country

B · Conditions which might threaten public policy or public security

  • Drug addiction
  • Profound mental disturbance, including manifest conditions of psychotic disturbance with agitation, delirium, hallucinations or confusion

Common questions

Greecequestions answered

Why does Greece require tests when Spain does not?

Greek law asks the certificate to address other infectious, contagious and parasitic diseases in addition to the general public health standard. In practice this means supporting evidence on tuberculosis and syphilis. Greece also specifies its own certificate form rather than accepting a general letter.

What TB evidence do you accept?

Either proof of BCG vaccination — a record in your notes or a clear photograph of the scar on your upper arm — or, if you have never been vaccinated, a recent chest X-ray report confirming you are clear of tuberculosis.

Where can I get the syphilis blood test?

Through your own GP, an NHS sexual health clinic, or a private laboratory. Private tests are widely available and usually return within a few days. Send us the result and we will proceed.

Do you complete the official Greek Embassy form?

Yes. We complete the standard medical certificate form specified under Article 5, paragraph 3 and Article 6 of Law 4251/2014. If your consulate has given you a particular version, send it to us and our doctor will complete that document.

How far in advance should I order?

Allow four to six weeks before your consulate appointment. Arranging the TB evidence and syphilis result is the step that most affects your timeline, and the Consulate generally expects documents dated within one month of submission.

Do I need to attend the Consulate in person?

Applicants for a Greek national visa are normally required to attend the Consulate in person for an interview about the purpose of their stay. UK applications are submitted through Global Visa Center World rather than at the Embassy directly.

Which Greek visas need a certificate?

National Type D visas covering stays between 90 and 365 days — including work and employment visas, the Digital Nomad Visa, the Financially Independent Person route, and long-term study. Short-stay Schengen visits do not require one.

Does the certificate also confirm fitness to work?

Where your application is for a work visa, the certificate normally confirms fitness to work as well. Tell us your visa category when you order so the correct wording is used.
